Dear Father Justin,
When was the minaret and mosque built?
Regards,
Richard
The mosque and minaret date from the early eleventh century. The mosque was converted from an existing structure that may have been the infirmary referred to by Pope Gregory the Great, who wrote the Abbot John on September 1, 600, sending him 15 sheets, 30 blankets, and 15 beds, with funds for the purchase and transportation of 15 mattresses. Mosque and church have since stood next to each other as emblems of peaceful coexistence.
