Saint Macarius the Egyptian

Saint Macarius the Egyptian wrote Fifty Spiritual Homilies. In Homily 25, he writes that the fire which appeared to Moses in the bush was the same fire, in the shape of a chariot, that caught up Elias from the earth. It was this fire that warmed the heart of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, when they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? (Luke 24:32). It was this immaterial divine fire that descended on the holy apostles on the day of Pentecost. Angels and ministering spirits partake of the shining of this fire, as it is written, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flaming fire (Hebrews 1:7). It was of this fire that Christ spoke when he said, I am come to send fire upon the earth, and I would that it were already kindled (Luke 12:49).
