The Facade of the South Wing

The facade of the south wing has been renovated. We now need to continue with the renovation of the rooms on the west side.

    Dear Father Justin,

It is very interesting to see the differences between the renovated side and the non renovated. Does the non renovated remain basically untouched since the 6th century? If so, were you able to photograph the rooms in a non renovated state?

I can not imagine the technical issues involved in getting electricity, plumbing and other modern services into the structure in a relatively nonintrusive way.

    With best regards,

    Richard

The South Wing was finished in 1951. but it was built right up against the sixth century wall. In my room, this wall had been covered over with plaster, but in the renovation, we stripped off the plaster, revealing the ashlars of granite put in place almost 1500 years ago. An inscription over the entrance to the monastery states that the monastery was completed in the thirtieth year of the reign of the Emperor Justinian. This would be the year AD 557.
