Liturgy in the Chapel of the Theologian

Father Michael at the beginning of the Liturgy. There is a tiny window to the east behind the holy table, and three larger windows in the south wall.

The ‘gifts set forth’ waiting to be brought to the holy table at the Great Entrance.

Reflections in the glass of the side window where I was chanting.

The icon on the iconostasion depicting Saints John and James, the Sons of Zebedee. Saint John is holding a Gospel with the opening verses, Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὀ Λόγος. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ His hand is open to the radiance above.

Towards the end of the Divine Liturgy, a sunbeam enters through the tiny east window. The small medallion surmounting the gates into the bema depicts the Virgin Mary of the Burning Bush, with the Prophet Moses, and Saint Catherine, patron saints of Sinai.

In our secularized world where the sacred has been marginalized, we are very grateful to have this window into a sacred space where our souls can come to rest.
