Weathered steps lead up to the Chapel of Saint Anthony, and the Chapel of Saint John the Forerunner. Ἐποίησε σελήνην εἰς καιρούς· ὁ ἥλιος ἔγνω τὴν δύσιν αὐτοῦ. (Ψαλμὸς ργ΄) He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. (Psalm 104:19) At nightfall, a silence descends upon the monastery. The cell of a solitary is the cleft in the rock where God spoke with Moses, as the Fathers say. (Saint Isaac the Syrian) The last of the sun’s rays strike the bell tower and the cells opposite. Beneath the ancient walls, three bedouin on camels make their way home. Ἐπιλύχνιος Εὐχαριστία Φῶς ἱλαρὸν ἁγίας δόξης ἀθανάτου Πατρός, οὐρανίου, ἁγίου, μάκαρος, Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, ἐλθόντες ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλίου δύσιν, ἰδόντες φῶς ἑσπερινόν, ὑμνοῦμεν Πατέρα, Υἱόν, […] The bedouin who maintain the olive trees at the Church of the Forty Martyrs planted a garden. The flowers attracted a butterfly. It is a Vanessa cardui, popularly known as a Painted Lady butterfly. Over the years, the door to the Chapel of Saint Stephen has weathered to a beautiful dappled blue. |
